'LAZY LEADER ROAD SHOW' HELPS RECRUIT VOLUNTEERS
Eight Frank Luke Chapter members were among some 40 attendees at a workshop led by Cynthia D’Amour, nationally known leadership coach, held Nov. 7 at Davis-Monthan AFB.
The former teacher and leadership expert travels around the country, as well as conducting training over the Internet, to help non-profit groups learn about growing their volunteer pools.
Attendees included Frank Luke Chapter members Joe Marvin, Sharon Marvin, Sarah Hood, Mads “Rik” Brandt, Birte Brandt, Jerry Ashley, Harry Bailey and Luisa Bailey.
D’Amour defined “lazy leaders” as group members who accomplish their mission through the work of others, instead of doing everything themselves. Some tips for leaders include the following:
To determine potential volunteers’ “hot buttons,” find out what they want to do and what is in it for them — sense of community, personal satisfaction, professional development.
D'Amour suggests encouraging them to return by including them and making meetings fun. “Bring food, make it a party,” she said. "Give recognition frequently."
In addidion, she says, "Learn how to say no — say 'thank you for asking, I can’t do it myself, but let me introduce you to someone (or several others) who can help.' Refer and/or delegate."
Personal leadership velocity — moving at a speed towards a direction. “How can we do this with less effort?”
Developing a strategy takes time and effort but proves worthwhile.
